OUTER BANKS: SEASON 4

Outer Banks is Netflix’s hit mystery teen drama. It follows a group of teens hunting treasure while conquering love, money conflicts, danger, and developing friendships.

And we’re back for season 4! Cadence Effects provided visual effects for season 4 of Outer Banks, tackling more than 780 shots. Our work consisted of blue screen replacements, CG elements, photo replacements, crew/equipment removals, fog additions, land paint outs, stunt and mic wire removals, enhanced the light beam on the lighthouse, added lightning, cell phone comps, and more.

Much like the show, working on Outer Banks is always an adventure! Here’s a deeper look into season 4 episode 2:

“For the night sequence in episode 2, we had the challenge of converting scenes shot in the middle of daylight into the dead of night. Adding to the difficulty was the extreme brightness of the sky and water due to direct sunlight and reflections, which made it difficult to recover the edges of many details on actors and the boat, particularly for parts of shots that were out of focus. The trick with bringing this extreme background brightness down was to try and retain as much brightness and natural lighting on the actors and foreground as possible. In some cases, the background brightness was brought down by a factor of 50! We found that bringing things down in several separate steps yielded the best results, giving us more control over which parts of the shot would receive more or less treatment each step of the way. Once brightness was more in control, we were able to replace the sky with the stylized IR cloud look used throughout the season’s night scenes. All of this required working very closely with the show’s colorist to ensure the result would be consistent and realistic for them to mold into the final look and color. Some test shots required dozens of versions and iterations to finally lock down a solution. ”

3 BODY PROBLEM

3 Body Problem from Netflix is based on the Science fiction novel sharing the same name written by Liu Cixin. The series, created by David Benioff, D. B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo, stars Benedict Wong, Jess Hong, Jovan Adepo, Eiza González, John Bradley, Alex Sharp, Rosalind Chao, Zine Tseng, Sir Jonathan Pryce, Ben Schnetzer, and more. The series synopsis from Netflix: “Across continents and decades, five brilliant friends make earth-shattering discoveries as the laws of science unravel and an existential threat emerges.”

Cadence Effects delivered over 700 shots across all eight episodes of the series. Our team produced a wide variety of invisible visual effects: screen replacements, set/sky extensions, numerous split screens, speed ramps, blue/green screen replacements, rig removals, and more.

3 Body Problem has been a top 10 most viewed show on Netflix for five consecutive weeks since its premiere on March 21, 2024.

AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER – SEASON 1

Avatar: The Last Airbender from Netflix follows the story of a young boy tasked with saving the world by mastering the four elements. It aired on Netflix on February 22nd, 2024, and stars Gordon Cormier as Avatar Aang, Kiawentiio Tarbell as Katara, and Ian Ousley as Sokka.

Cadence Effects was responsible for visual effects for over 165 shots across episodes 1-7. We tackled a variety of tasks, including wire removals, clean-up work, retiming, set extensions, split screens, and more. A few notable scenes we had a hand in: snow additions in episode 7 to enhance the environment where the water tribe lives, adding atmospheric elements in episode 3 when team Avatar meets Jet, and set extensions for the opening sequence in the Fire Nation during episode 1.

OUTER BANKS: SEASON 3

Netflix’s Outer Banks is a show following two different groups of teenagers searching for treasure in a coastal town along the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Cadence Effects has worked on all three seasons of the hit show. For OBX3 we worked on over 500 shots with a lot of variety on each episode across the entire season. Starting with CG elements: we created the wall in episode 1, a hotel set extension for episode 2, a church on the hillside set extension for episode 4, the train in the heist sequence of episode 5, the propellers and boat motor in episode 8. Along with that we did removals of the crew in the lighthouse shots on episode 6, removal of the horizon on all water shots on episode 4, added soot to the Pogues’ faces, worked on the cave scene and flares of episode 10, and more. Much like the show, working on OBX is always an adventure!

Season 3 aired on February 23rd, 2023 and is currently available to stream on Netflix.

SERVANT: SEASON 3

Servant is a horror tv show executive produced by M. Night Shyamalan and streaming on Apple TV. Cadence has had the opportunity to work on all 3 seasons of the show and we are currently working on the 4th season as well! We were tasked with creating intricate phone animations and comps seen in season 3. We also created set extensions for the exterior of the main house.

Season 3 premiered on January 21st 2022 and is available to stream on Apple TV.

ARCHIVE 81

Archive 81 is a supernatural horror tv show adaptation of the podcast that shares the same name. Cadence worked on over 340 shots for the first season of the Netflix show. We did a number of both visible and invisible effects on this project. We created set extensions for the opening scene showing the New York city skyline.  We were also tasked with creating the effect of a photo being processed. Along with all of that, we did stylized monitor comps by adding chromatic aberration, distortion, and grain to create a vintage VHS effect. 

Archive 81 premiered on January 14 2022 and is available to stream on Netflix.
